报告1内容简介:

In road haulage the empty weight of a vehicle is a significant contributor to fuel consumption and resulting CO2 emissions. The application of lightweight materials in semi-trailer design is one avenue that needs to be explored in reducing the carbon footprint of road freight vehicles. There are very few regulations which determine the structural design of typical road freight trailers, providing large scope for innovation in design. This seminar examines the potential use of composite materials in road freight trailers that can aid significant weight reductions while improving mechanical performance. A holistic approach to achieve a lightweight composite trailer is examined through a parametric optimisation study in the finite element package Abaqus. Lightweighting of individual subcomponents through composite substitution is also examined as a more prudent first step to achieving composite trailers. To put the research into context, a brief state-of-the-art of lightweight composite trailers will also be presented.

报告2内容简介:

Reduced CO2 emissions and increased vehicle fuel economy is a critical matter for automotive technology development. To achieve this aim, various activities have been performed. For instance, automobile manufacturers are now using more composite materials due to their light weighting benefits versus steel and aluminium. Moreover, a new generation of electrical and hybrid vehicles are becoming increasingly popular as petrol price rise. A different approach to minimise the overall mass of automobiles as well as increase energy storage and power generation output is to utilise multifunctional design. This concept requires the integration of energy storage systems with the vehicle structure. By having components acting both to carry loads and participate in power generation or energy storage, overall system weight and efficiency can be improved. This seminar will examine the design and optimisation of composite sandwich structures with lithium polymer batteries embedded within the core of the sandwich structure. The static and dynamic response of the sandwich structures is captured through finite element modelling and an experimental test program. The effect of mechanical loading on battery performance is also investigated.
