Non-Destructive Testing and Evaluation (NDT&E) is one of the major requirements in aerospace structural design and plays an important role in operation and maintenance of aerospace structures. Almost all the components have to pass through various NDT quality assurance procedures. For damage tolerance design used in aviation, NDT is a prerequisite. Appropriate use of NDT guarantees safety in aerospace and is thus a subject of highest attention. Although aerospace industries have to clearly stick to certified NDT procedures, there is a large amount of technology being currently developed within the engineering science discipline, which is worth a discussion with respect to their potential application. Meanwhile, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) has become a key technology to aerospace structures, dealing with the development and implementation of techniques and systems where monitoring, inspection and damage detection become an integral part of structures. It further merges with a variety of techniques related to diagnostics and prognostics. To communicate latest R&D achievements to industrial applicants on the one hand and to discuss advanced and improved methods among scientists and industrial researchers on the other, the Symposium on NDT in Aerospace has been established in 2008 and has been organized on an annual basis since 2010. It has been run in places all around the globe where aerospace has a home including Hamburg/Germany, Montreal/Canada (2011), Augsburg/Germany (2012), Singapore (2013), Madrid/Spain (2014), Bremen/Germany (2015) and Bangalore/India (2016) so far. The 9th Symposium on NDT in Aerospace will be held in November 2017 in Xiamen/China.

Major topics on NDT & SHM for the conference include, but are not limited to:

  • Sensors and Actuators
  • System Design and Integration
