Abstract: Many objects, such as honeycombs to mosaic tiles, involve patterns. Among them, there are a family of patterns that can lead to geometrical transformations of the objects. Origami pattern is one example. The shape change has inspired many artists and also resulted in creation of novel deployable structures which are both mathematically interesting and have direct engineering applications.
My talk will consist of two parts: morphing origami structures and energy absorption structures. The focus of the first part is on the mathematical modelling and kinematic analysis of structures that are created using origami patterns, including folding rigid shopping bags, foldable cylinders and thick panel origami. The applications of origami structures as energy absorption devices will form the second part of the talk.
I hope that the talk could generate some common interests in these fascinating research fields and I am looking forward to possible collaborations on one or all of the areas introduced in this talk and beyond.
Bio:由衷教授，英国剑桥大学博士，牛津大学终身教授。由衷博士是国际上从事可动/可展结构研究的专家之一。其主要学术论文被国际知名杂志Nature和 Science等收录，也曾接受过Science杂志的专访。曾获得包括英国皇家工程院和英国土木工程师协会的奖励。其研究成果获英国金融时报(Financial Times)特别报道，并被选入2006年代表英国最高水平的皇家协会在白金汉宫的科学日展览。由衷教授兼任Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science (IMechE Proceedings Part C)编委,新加坡南洋理工大学Tan Chin Tuan visiting fellow，英国工程和物理科学研究基金会评审团成员等。
