Human spine is one of the major musculoskeletal system with an important function of protecting the spinal cord within the spinal canal, and the different articulations facets at different regions of the whole spine allow restricted motions in six degrees of freedom with all its associated soft tissues (ligaments, intervertebral disc).  Any degeneration/injury to any of the soft/bony structures of the spine will lead to changes in the biomechanical responses under loads and lead to spinal deformity or diseases finally.

To predict the changes of the spine under load, the finite element method offer the best analysis tool.  And in order to get accurate responses of the spine for different patients, segmentation and finite element generation of the patient specific CT scan data, and simulation of certain loading configurations, based on the computed output, the particular intervertebral level will be clearly identified and surgical treatment/management suggested through further modified models.

The aim of this presentation is to introduce a few of the kinematic analyses of spine under different load configurations and also to demonstrate how the CT scan images are processed and post process for finite element modelling, and how load can be applied to the model and analyse the response for prevention or treatment management and how specific conditions can be optimally treated in the clinical setting. Three specific cases will be  presented: 1. Effect of Muscle Activation on Head-neck Complex under Frontal Car Impact; 2. Investigation of Stability of a L2-L3 Motion Segment; 3. Effect of Dynamic Stabilization Device Stiffness on Disc Loading under Compression.

报告人简介:

Prof. Teo Ee-Chon,博士研究生导师,前新加坡南洋理工大学教授,现为宁波大学特聘教授。博士毕业于英国思克莱德大学,曾就职于新加坡南洋理工大学,英国福特汽车公司等。担任Medical Engineering and Physics期刊编委,南洋理工大学机械设计指导委员会理事,法国SpineVision、新加坡BioSensors Pte Ltd、美国Bruce H Barkalow Inc等多家企业研究顾问。主持研究经费超五百万元,在运动人体仿真领域发表SCI收录论文60余篇。
