Abstract:  In this presentation, different formulations used in flexible multibody system (MBS) dynamics are discussed. The fundamental problems associated with some formulations are highlighted and justifications for using other formulations are discussed. A discussion of the history of the subject is presented.
Ahmed A. Shabana: Professor Ahmed A. Shabana is a Professor of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department of University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). He received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1982 and worked as a postdoctoral fellow there before joining UIC in Fall 1983. Professor Shabana named the Richard and Loan Hill Professor On April 14th, 2005, the College of Engineering announced the recipients of the first two Richard and Loan Hill Professorships of Engineering in the UIC. He is internationally known for his research contributions in the areas of large scale computations as applied to dynamic and multi-body systems such as vehicles, machines and robots. He proposed the famous absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF) which has been considered the benchmark in the field of multibody system dynamics. He is the Founding Chair of the ASME Technical Committee on Multi-Body Systems and Nonlinear Dynamics. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
